According to Torreon (2015), the United States has been at war with both Afghanistan and Iran for the last seventeen and fifteen years respectively. The primary purpose of the war has been to fight terrorists in the country. This is especially after 9/11 attacks, which has seen the United States become more involved in these wars. Despite these efforts, Boggs (2017) has posited that fighting terrorist forces is usually associated with a wide range of challenges. In this consideration, this paper is based on the interview of Stanley A. McChrystal, who was a commander in the Iraq war, in order to understand the challenges associated with fighting terrorists.

According to Stanley McChrystal , before 9/11, the battle against terrorist organizations/insurgencies was narrowly focused and centralized. As such, most of the operations were not dome with a high degree of intelligence. Additionally, before the 9/11 attacks, only occasional operations were conducted with a high amount of secrecy (Gideon, 2013).
