Instructions
This week you will use your readings from the past two weeks as a point of departure to create your own artistic production and a reflection paper.

Part 1: Art Creation
Select one of the visual art pieces from Chapters 1-6 or the lessons from Weeks 1-3 to use as a point of inspiration. Create a painting, sculpture, drawing, or work of architecture inspired by your selected art piece.

Part 2: Reflection
Write a reflection about the relationship between your art production and the inspiration piece. Include the following in the reflection paper:

  • Introduction
  • Inspiration Piece
    • Include image.
    • Record the title, artist, year, and place of origin.
    • Briefly explain the background of the inspiration piece.
  • Your Art Piece
    • Include image.
    • Provide a title.

    • Explain the thematic connection between the two pieces.

Name of the painting: hopeless

Name of the artist: Roy Lichenstein

Year of creation: 1963

The 1963 painting was created by Roy Lichenstein. It was created using acrylic and oil paint. Currently, the painting is displayed at the Kunstmuseum Basel. It was created as part of pop art movement and its dimensions are 44 inches by 44 inches with a portrait layout (Lichtenstein Paintings, 2016). The pop art movement was highly influenced by comic strips, which is also evident in this particular painting. Andy Warhol created some of the earliest works in this style. However, Lichtenstein did not have knowledge of this when creating his work. The artist went on to create numerous comic strip like paintings depicting women who are miserable in their romantic relationships (Lichtenstein Paintings, 2016). Such included hopeless and drowning girl.

Hopeless was inspired by a panel from run for love by Tony Abruzzo (Lichtenstein Paintings, 2016). It contains a female character, emotions that can be seen from the character’s face. She appears to be quite vulnerable given her teary-eyes. It is also safe to say that she is stressed: inclusion of the word hopeless and her eyes indicate that her tears are not of joy. The painting includes vibrant bright colors that help the viewer focus on the character’s emotions and beauty. It is a witty depiction of what women endure in the society and daily life.
