Have you ever been asked to work mandatory overtime? If so, what was your response?
Did you work the requested hours, or did you refuse? If you refused, what were the consequences, if any?
What is your opinion about the use of mandatory overtime?

Solution:
I would be surprised if there is anyone amongst us that has not been asked to work mandatory overtime before. If so, is it because you are protected by the laws in your state, or is it that your hospital does not have an acute nurse shortage? I have been asked to work mandatory overtime severally. While I have protested a few times, and for good reasons, I have also had to step up and work the extra hours. There have also been times at which I volunteered to work extra hours for personal reasons. I have yet to be punished for refusing to work mandatory overtime. Truth is that we have a rather understanding charge nurse who is able to ensure that such overtimes are fairly distributed. Additionally, the nursing staff understands and appreciates the fact that we do not have ample staffing in our organization.
