Background of Study

This paper aims at providing a research critique of two quantitative articles. Taking this into account, the first article is Standardizing the Bedside Report to Promote Nurse Accountability and Work Effectiveness by Walsh, Messmer, Hetzler, O’Brien, and Winningham (2018).  This study aimed at examining how bedside shift handover can be standardized for the purpose of promoting work effectiveness as well as nurse accountability. The second article is Implementation of a Modified Bedside Handoff for a Postpartum Unit by Wollenhaup, Stevenson, Thompson,  Gordon, and Nunn (2017).  This study aimed at exploring how the implementation of nursing shift handover can enhance patient satisfaction in a postpartum unit.  Both of these studies found out that bedside shift reporting usually increase patient satisfaction and nursing quality. The identified practice issue relates to patient handoffs at the nursing station leading to a breakdown in communication.  It has been established that communication during patient handoffs plays a vital role in ensuring that critical information regarding the patient is passed from outgoing nurses to incoming nurses. This, in turn, reduces medication errors, thus enhancing patient outcomes. However, with nursing reporting at the nursing station, communication breakdown may be experienced due to many factors including the fact that nurses may get involved in other things such as socializing. In order to address this concern, bedside reporting has been recommended. Therefore, the formulated PICOT question for this study is as follows;

In hospitalized patients (P), does bedside reporting (I) in comparison to reporting at the nursing station (c) helps in enhancing patient satisfaction (O) within a period of 8 weeks (T)

How the Two Articles Support the Nurse Practice Issue

The two quantitative studies support the chosen nursing practice issue. Specifically, the study by Walsh et al. (2018) explored how bedside shift handover can promote the effectiveness of nurses, this leading to enhanced patient satisfaction.  Therefore, this study hugely supports the identified practice issue given the fact that it evaluates the effectiveness of bedside shift reporting in comparison to the nursing station reporting. On the other hand, the study by Wollenhaup et al. (2017) explored how the implementation of bedside shift reporting can help in increasing patient satisfaction in the postpartum unit. Taking this into account, this study supports the identified practice issue, as it provides insight into how bedside reporting is more effective in comparison to the nursing station reporting.
