Autonomy

The physician attending to James suggested immediate dialysis due to fluid buildup. From this point, it can be seen that the physician applied the principle of beneficence, which upholds that procedures need to be provided with the intention of doing good to the patient involved.  This is also in line with the principle of non-maleficence, which stipulates that medical procedures should not do any harm to the patients or the members of the society (Cunha & Garrafa, 2016). The principle of autonomy typically requires that patient have the autonomy of intention, thought, as well as action when it comes to making decisions related to healthcare procedures. As such, in this case, when Mike informs the physician that they will forego the dialysis, the physician does not coerce him.  This means that the physician respects the decision of mike.
