Introduction
The purposes of each case study assignment include the following:

To hone your abilities to research using scholarly sources
To advance critical thinking and writing skills
To compile a response to the prompts provided
To explore a historical topic and make connections to change over time

Instructions
Pick one (1) of the following topics. Then, address the corresponding questions/prompts for your selected topic:

Option 1: Exploration and Effects on Native Americans

Explain what motivated the European world powers to explore the Americas.
Describe the economic effects of exploration based on the Colombian exchange.
Analyze the effects of exploration on Native Americans.
Based on research, analyze if Europeans might be held accountable for transmitting Old World diseases to people in the Western Hemisphere.

Option 2: Slavery vs. Indentured Servitude

Explain how and why slavery developed in the American colonies.
Describe in what ways the practice of slavery was different between each colonial region in British North America.
Analyze the differences between slaves and indentured servants.

Option 3: Women in Colonial America

Pick two colonies (New England, Middle, or Southern colonies) and explain how women’s roles differ in the two colonies of your choice.
Describe what legal rights women held during the colonial period.
Analyze how Native women’s lives were different from colonial women’s lives.

Make sure to use your course text and incorporate an additional scholarly source from the Chamberlain Library in your response.

Slavery vs. Indentured Servitude

According to Cornell, Keene, and O’Donnell (2013), during the 17^th as well as the 18^th century, slavery was heavily practiced across the American colonies. This was mainly for the purpose of providing cheap labor to various plantations in these American Colonies. This essay seeks to explore the development of slavery across American colonies. It also explores how slaves differed from indentured servants.

A myriad of past studies on the slave trade has affirmed that while slavery across the American colonies developed from various complex factors, it was highly correlated with the need for cheap labor. This is particularly when it came to labor-intensive sugar plantations in the Caribbean that were operated by Great Britain, Spain, France, and the Dutch Republic (OpenStax, 2019). Taking this into consideration, most slaves were not imported directly from Africa, but from the Caribbean. Additionally, although on a small scale, indigenous people were enslaved in different North American colonies.

Across different British Colonies of North America, slavery manifested differently. In these colonies, slavery as regarded as one of the integral parts of the economic culture of the Chesapeake as well as the lower South. Specifically, in regards to the Chesapeake, on average, each slave owner owned one slave (OpenStax, 2019).
