The American System, Transportation, and Communication

Ha (2015) posits that the American System was an economic plan in the United States that hugely the American policy during the early 19th century.  This plan was rooted in the ideas of Alexander Hamilton in the “American School”. Nonetheless, Henry Clay, who was a congressman, was the foremost proponent of this plan. In fact, many scholars agree that he was the first person to refer to the plan as the “American System”. On this understanding, the role of this essay is to explore the idea of Henry Clay’s “American System, and how the system would help in building the American market together with the economy. The essay also examines the role of mechanization as well as communication in the American System.

Cornell, Keene, and O’Donnell (2013) contend that the American System was a critical program for economic development that was championed by Henry Clay following the war of 1812.  In this view, Henry Clay is regarded as one of the most popular members of Congress during the early 19thcentury. The primary idea of Henry Clay was that the national government needed to implement a wide range of protective tariffs as well as internal enhancements.  In support of this assertion Ha (2015) denotes that the American System from the point of view of Henry Clay consisted of three main elements.
