Solution:

Reflection

This reflection paper will reflect on the past weeks and discuss how the course helped in meeting the MSN program Outcome # 5; MSN Essential # VIII; and NONPF Nurse Practitioner Core Competency # 8.

MSN Program Outcome # 5

The MSN PO# 5 has it that MSN nurses have been able to advocate for positive health outcomes via evidence-based, compassionates, and collaborative advanced nursing practice (Parker, 2017). In other words, MSN nurses must go beyond ordinary nursing practice to carry out extraordinary roles and responsibilities.

An example of how I met this PO#5 is when I advocated for the implementation of a health and wellness program for patients with heart failure. I had realized that most of these patients lacked basic health literacy knowledge and skills on how to take care of themselves for health promotion and disease prevention. The program focuses on the education of patients and training on physical fitness and diet as well as other lifestyle factors such as smoking.

The second example was advocating for an increase in nursing staff in the emergency care unit. We had a shortage of 4 nurses and the existing nurses were working for long hours as well as mandatory overtime. Considering the negative impacts of this on both patients and nurses, I wrote a letter to the organizational leadership and management, explaining with evidence-based rationale as to why the organization should source for more nurses in the emergency care unit.
