Critical Decision Making for Providers

With the increasing complexity in the healthcare system, it has become paramount for healthcare professionals to enhance their critical decision-making skills in order to make the best decisions that promote quality and safety of care (Sharples et al., 2017). In this regard, this paper will explore the critical decision-making scenario provided by the Allied Health Community (n.d).

Description of the Scenario

The scenario involves Mike who is the facility’s lab technician. Mike is again running late to report to work following an accident that took place while on his way. Upon arriving in the workplace, he meets with a spill on the floor. Since Mike already has received a warning from his supervisor about his repeated lateness, he gets into a dilemma on whether to report the spillage and risk being late again or to ignore the spill and rush to his workstation to avoid being late. Being the sole provider in his family, he really needs to keep his job to be able to provide for his wife and the newborn baby. Slowing down to report and address the issue of spillage would lead to him clocking at his work station late and risking his job. Mike also reasons that it is not his responsibility to address the spill and in any way, it will be cleaned sooner or later.

Consequences of a Failure to Report

The decision of Mike to ignore the spillage and fail to report results in negative consequences. Even though he manages to timely clock in, the spill results in one patient sliding and falling down. The patient suffers a painful injury and her hip breaks. Mike now encounters the dilemma of whether to confess that his failure to report the spill could be the reason the patient fell and risk being terminated from his job.

Impacts of Failure of Report

Evidently, the failure to report this spillage on the floor presents negative impacts on the health care facility. It results in a costly patient fall which in accordance with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) policy, is non-reimbursable as it is due to negligence………………Please click the icon below to purchase full answer at only $10
