The current government is a coalition between rival leaders: President Salva Kiir and Riek Machar as the deputy president. The latter is the former leader of the opposition. Before then, the country had been involved in six years of intense civil war, which resulted in the displacement of at least 5 million people and deaths of nearly 400,000 (Associated Press, 2020).
