The United States politics are dominated by two core ideologies: liberalism and conservatism. The two ideologies impact the national budget significantly. Liberals lean towards market regulation in a bid to protect consumers, deficit spending, and distribution of wealth via progressive taxation (Whitman, 2019). Conversely, conservatives seem to favor balanced budgets, deregulation, and free markets. A balanced budget implies that government expenditure is equivalent to the revenues. Since the 9/11 terrorist attack, the national debt has been on the rise. The federal government increased spending on military, bailouts, and cleaning up the affected site. Now, the government is facing yet another financial crisis. This article explores the current economic challenges owing to the COVID-19 virus. It also details the importance of the proposed federal economic stimulus program.
Summary of the Article
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, governments across the globe are asking citizens to work from home. The United States is no exception. The economy is already feeling the effects of the pandemic. Public expenditure has dropped substantially. In a bid to prevent a looming economic crisis, Capitol Hill has been holding discussions to develop and approve an economic stimulus plan (Stein et al., 2020). Congress is under a lot of pressure to pass an economic program as the national cases are rising faster than anticipated. Some businesses have moved to lay off some of their employees as they are struggling to settle their debts. The travel industry is one of the most adversely affected sectors.
