The Massachusetts Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies(©) plays a pivotal role in expanding the Institute of Medicine’s core competencies for all health care professionals and the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses competencies for quality and safety to define the expectations for all professional nurses of the future.  In this perspective, The Massachusetts Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies defines the knowledge, attitude, as well as skills required as the minimal expectations for initial nursing practice after completion of a prelicensure professional nursing education program (Massachusetts Department of Higher Education Nursing Initiative, 2016).
