It is time to get out into your community!
- Go online to the U.S. Census Bureau at https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/ (Links to an external site.) (*note, you will be using this website in the Week 2 assignment, so you can get started on collecting all the required data if desired)
- Input your local zip code, city, or county. Try to get as specific data as possible (city, township, county).
- Next, identify the:
- Total population
- Median income
- Percentage or number of persons living in poverty
- Go to your local grocery store, use a flyer, or app. Include the stores name, city, and state. Identify cost for the following items (please note whether items are organic):
- 1 gallon of milk
- 1 loaf of bread
- 1 bag of apples (include price per pound)
- 1 bag of carrots
- 1 large container of yogurt
- 1 2-liter of soda

I reside in Palm Beach County, Florida. The estimated population of Palm Beach County is 1,496,770 (U.S Census Bureau, 2019). One social factor affecting groceries purchased is income and poverty. According to French, Tangney, Crane, Wang, and Appelhans (2019), households with lower income purchase less healthful foods as compared to households with higher income. Food purchasing patterns mediate income disparities in the quality of dietary intake. The rate of persons in poverty in the county is 12.2%, higher than the national rate of 11.8%. More so, the county has a median household income of $59,943 which is slightly close to that of the U.S nation which is $60,293. It is important to also note that the county’s per capita income in the last 12 months, $37,998, is higher than the nation’s which is 32,621 (U.S Census Bureau, 2019).
