In particular, is it important for nurse practitioners? Does theory inform nurse practitioner practice? If you believe that it is important, explain why it is useful. Nursing theory is important to nursing profession and practice. The increasing complexities and disparities in current healthcare trends such as increased interprofessional collaborations, increased attempts by nurses to maintain professional boundaries with medicine, and the extension of nurses’ scope of practice leading to them conducting activities previously done by doctors, need guidance from a nursing theory. According to Saleh (2018), nursing theory can help in instilling a sense of identity in nurses, allowing patients, healthcare professionals, and managers to acknowledge nurses’ roles and unique contributions to healthcare definitions. A recognized definition of nursing theory allows nurses to better understand their worth and role in the field of healthcare (Butts & Rich, 2017). More so, the nursing theory allows nurses to decide what they know and what needs to be known.
