Social Problem Research

It is the responsibility of social workers to address social problems affecting the populations they serve. To meet this responsibility, social workers ought to have the capacity to proactively identify any disparities and gulfs in social policies and effective advocate and to engage fully in the policy development process. In addition, the skill and ability to link theory and research to the process of policy making and implementation without giving rise to new disparities is considered essential in social work practice (Goldblatt, 2015). Taking this into consideration, this paper seeks to address the social problem of poverty by providing a description of the known causes or explanation for poverty, theoretical explanations, and approaches by scholars and policy analysts in describing poverty, and policies resulting from the discussions and explanations of their effectiveness and resolving poverty.

Known Explanations and Causes of Poverty

Poverty is referred to lack of deprivation of social and economic resources including food, clothing, housing, and better education and health (Butterfield, Scherrer, & Olcon, 2017). Poverty has various effects on one’s social relations, standards of living, consumption patterns and activities of leisure time. In U.S poverty is recognized the violation of human dignity and deprivation of opportunities and choices resulting to one’s inability to productively interact, relation, and participate in the society (Butterfield et al., 2017).
