According to Strachan (2014), the causes of the First World War were several and diverse. Taking this into account, one of the primary causes was the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria. The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand invoked many international alliances within a few days. Consequently, major powers went into war. Another major cause of war as denoted by Strachan (2014) was imperialism. This is where powerful countries exploit weaker countries. In this view, most superpowers wanted to exploit weaker countries, which resulted in a conflict of interests among these superpowers. Nationalism also contributed to the First World War. On this, during this period, each country felt superior over others. This, in turn, resulted in conflicts, which could only be solved by going into war.
