As Rice (2018) notes, “the boundaries that formerly separated not-for-profit and for-profit organizations have blurred, leading to a greater exchange of ideas between the sectors” (p. 14). Choose a not-for-profit organization that operates in your community or in your career field. Next, choose a for-profit business that provides a similar service. Compare and contrast the mission of both organizations. How does each organization use resources to achieve its goal? Do the organizations benefit from any exchange of ideas?

Consider how the other student’s chosen organizations compare and contrast to the organizations you chose. Are their missions and services similar or different? Do they use the factors of production in the same way or differently?
Solution:
There is a significant difference between not-for-profit and for-profit organizations. To start with, non-profit organizations are those that engage in business activities to fulfill private and public interests without seeking to attain commercial profit (Morah, 2021). Such include organizations that are exclusively operated for public safety, religious, scientific, or charitable purposes. An ideal example of such institutions is the Johns Hopkins University. The university was established in 1873 with a $7 million donation from Johns Hopkins (Johns Hopkins University, 2021). Today, the institution continues to operate as a non-profit institution. Its mission is to “educate its students and cultivate their capacity for lifelong learning, to foster independent and original research, and to bring the benefits of discovery to the world” (Johns Hopkins University, 2021).
