Explain how and why slavery developed in the American colonies. Why couldn’t colonists use indentured servants as they had in the past? How would you describe the differences between slaves and indentured servants?

According to Keene and O’Donnell (2012), before slavery in the United States, there was indentured servitude. An indentured servant enters an agreement with their master to provide labor in exchange for the cost of their immigration and a place to live. In this view, the contract between indentured servants and masters lasted five years in most situations. After this period, the indentured servant would be free. By 1660, most of the good land in the country was taken (History.com, 2019). This to a huge extent angered the impoverished pioneer farmers. They were pushed west where the land was mountainous and where they faced threats from Native Americans.
