According to Kutney-Lee et al. (2016), collaborative committees play a pivotal role in ensuring the effective functioning and the propensity of healthcare committees to undertake their roles. There are various approaches by which different committees exercise their connective and collaborative responsibilities in order to lead the organization. In health care systems, shared governance supports and promotes joint responsibility and accountability for decision making regarding aspects that influence the nursing practice. Taking this into account, this paper will discuss on the function and the role of a committee I have recently attended, further it will observe whether the committee employed shared governance model well as processes used to sustain the model.
Committee Function and Role
I recently had the privilege of attending a Geriatrician Unit health professionals’ committee held within the hospital I currently work in; St. Antony’s Medical Center. The committee comprised of 10 professionals from distinct disciplines and with diverse perspectives which include 3 registered nurses, 3 assistant nurses, 2 doctors, the nurse manager, the charge nurse. The main committee’s agenda was to address the issue regarding the increasing number of in-patient elderly patients suffering from pressure ulcers.
The Committee Interaction and Process
The committee was well-organized and it commenced on time. I observed various aspects of shared governance model through the interactions among the committee team members. For instance, I realized that the team leader or rather the coordinator had shared the team agendas prior to the meeting.
