Proper clinical decision making enhances total patient outcomes as well as the quality of care provided. Taking this into account, this paper seeks to evaluate a scenario regarding critical decision making for providers and provides approaches for improving decision making process among health care providers.
Scenario Description
Mike, a lab technician has been repeatedly late to work. His supervisor has warned him several times that he shall face termination if he clocks in to work late. This job is very important to him as his wife and new born solely depend on him. On this certain day, Mike is running late again, even though he left home 20 minutes earlier than usual, he encountered an accident on his commute. On his way to clock in, he notices a spill on the floor. In as much as he would like to report the spill and have it cleaned, he is worried that he might be late in clocking in and thus opts to rush to clock in, assuming it shall be cleaned whilst he clocks in, after-all the spill is in another work area.
Consequences of Failure to Report
Following his failure to report the spill, a female patient slides and is admitted for severe pain. Her hip seems to be broken following the injury. The patient questions the hospital’s safety. It is evident that she no longer has faith in the safety of the hospital as she says she thought the hospital was a safe place and enquires why they do not have programs to prevent such risks. A further consequence is the guilty feeling that Mike feels has.
