Week 1 Discussion: Role of Government in Business
Both the state and federal governments regulate the business environment to protect employees. In my selected article, the authors discuss the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) as a government attempt to protect employees. In 2008, the 110th United States passed this legislation seeking to protect employees from discrimination based on their genetic information as it pertains to their employment and health insurance (Areheart & Roberts, 2019). Additionally, the legislation bars all entities covered by Title II, which include employment agencies and training and apprenticeship programs (Areheart & Roberts, 2019). In the article, the authors hold that more needs to be done to protect employee privacy. Like most other scholars, the authors find that GINA failed to abate anxieties relating to medical genetic testing. However, they argue that it has unappreciated value.
