Cases of obesity among citizens in New York have been on the rise over the last couple of years. This is across all populations, ranging from children to the elderly. Obesity levels in New York have reached epidemic proportions due to unhealthy eating habits and physical inactivity. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2017), 27% of adults in the state are obese while 34.1 are overweight. In regards to adolescent statistics, while 10.6% of adolescents are obese, 13.8% are overweight. When it comes to child statistics, while 15.1% of the children in the state are obese, 16.1% are overweight (CDC, 2017). Taking these figures into consideration, it implies that obesity is a serious problem that needs serious interventions.

Based on the above information, it is with no doubt that all people across New York are vulnerable to obesity. There are various community and prevention resources in New York that has been put in place for the purpose of addressing the increasing rates of obesity. To start with, in partnership with the SUNY Albany School of public health, the state department of health provided training as well as technical assistance and resources to hospitals and local health departments (CDC, 2017). These have played a fundamental role in the implementation of nutrition guidelines that are in consistency with the New York State Council on Food Policy’s guidelines. Secondly, the state has implemented Great Beginnings NY. This is a hospital-based initiative that helps in supporting decisions of mothers to breastfeed. This initiative has close to 70 birthing hospitals in the state participating. New York State has also funded 25 regional grantees to work in 86-high-need school districts as well as 230 communities in order to enhance a coordinated effort in increasing demand for and access to healthy food and beverages (CDC, 2017).
