Nursing Theory
One of the main nursing theories that have significantly influenced my values and goals is the Self-Care Nursing Theory. Developed by Dorothea Orem, the Self-Care Nursing Theory focuses on the role of nurses in supporting the ability of patients to be responsible and self-sufficient for their own care (Masters, 2018). This theory upholds that there is a substantial need for people to be knowledgeable regarding their health provides adequate self-care. Nurses can apply the Self-Care Nursing Theory by educating patients on how they can take care of their own health. Through this theory, nurses are able to assess the conditions of the patients in order to identify their needs. This helps in providing comprehensive guidance to the patients on how they can become responsible for their own care.
The Self-Care Nursing Theory fits my professional practice to a huge extent. Blair and Jansen (2015) have stressed that there is a considerable need for nurses to involve patients and their families in the delivery of care. Therefore, as a professional nurse, I can encourage patients to be independent in their care, which can ultimately help in expediting their recovery. I can also promote self-care behaviors through educating patients and families on how they can take care of their own health in different situations. By doing this, positive patient outcomes can be realized.
