Assignment 4.1: Research Paper

Capital punishment has been one of the most controversial issues over the last many years. According to Jones (2018), capital punishment takes into account the practice of executing people who commit capital crimes such as murder, rape, and treason. While some people argue that capital punishment should be abolished, others feel that is just a way of punishing capital offenders. On this understanding, this research paper reviews two articles on both sides of this issue. The paper also explains why capital punishment should be abolished.

Summaries of the Articles

The article that supports the abolishment of capital punishment is Virginia should abolish the death penalty by Fredericksburg (2020). According to this article, there is a considerable need for Virginia State to respect the lives of all people irrespective of the crime committed. As such, the authors of the article emphasizes that there is no need to seek retribution or revenge. Instead, the state should take into account restorative justice.  Given that darkness cannot drive out darkness, the article articulates that capital offenders should be punished by alternatives methods such as life imprisonment, rather than the death penalty (Fredericksburg, 2020).  Therefore, the commonwealth has a significant role when it comes to abolishing capital punishment in the state.
