US Healthcare Delivery System Reform and Restructuring

Healthcare reform is described by Akinyemiju, Jha, Moore, and Pisu (2016) as the process of modifying the healthcare system and how it operated to improve it for all Americans. The importance of healthcare reform and restructuring is that it helps in addressing quality and cost issues with healthcare, improving the accessibility of health services, and eliminating bad practices within the system (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017). This paper will identify an emerging healthcare law/ federal regulation for reformation or restructuring in the healthcare system and its effect on nursing practice and profession. The paper will equally discuss the impact of quality measures and pay for performance (P4P) on patient outcomes, and important nursing leadership and management roles in addressing emerging trends. The paper will also predict two approaches in which nursing will transform healthcare in the future.

Healthcare Law/ Federal Regulation for Reformation / Restructuring of Healthcare Delivery System

The emerging healthcare reform is the repeal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which will affect the insurance (health coverage) aspect of care delivery. The ACA was enacted in 2010, resulting in major changes in the U.S structure. The key objective of this health reform was to reduce un-insurance rates by making health coverage more affordable and expanding access to quality care (Maughan, Bobo, Butler, & Schantz, 2016). To achieve its goals, the ACA broadened the eligibility criteria for Medicaid and established new marketplaces in which those not covered by employers could purchase policies from the insurers directly. Since the adoption of ACA, approximately 20 new million people were insured and around 24 million people have accessed the subsidized or free healthcare via Medicaid expansion and tax credits.
