After the French and Indian War, Britain needed money. Consequently, the British government placed heavy taxes on the American colonists. According to Washington and Army (2014), Britain thought that the colonists should help pay for the way owing to the fact that it had been fought partly to defend the colonies. This made the colonists to resent this interference.  Additionally, as explained by Keene and O’Donnell (2012), a cultural movement took place in Europe in the late 1600s and 1700s which was regarded as the Enlightenment. As such, most of the most the writers involved in this movement such as John Locke wrote about various issues such as limited government as well as consent of the governed.
