Required Resources
Read/review the following resources for this activity:
- Textbook: Chapter 1 (All Sections), 2 (Sections 2.5 – 2.7)
- Lesson
- Minimum of 1 scholarly source
Initial Post Instructions
When data is collected, the most common calculations computed are the Measures of Central Tendency, mean, median and mode. It is important to know how to compute these values and it is also extremely important to know what these values mean in context of the data set.
Use the internet to find a data set. Key terms to search: Free Public Data Sets and Medical Data Sets.
- Introduce your Data Set and Cite the Source.
- Why was this data interesting to you?
- Calculate measures of central tendency (Mean, Median & Mode) and measures of variation (Range and Standard Deviation) for your data. Write a sentence for each calculation explaining what that value means in context of your data.
Follow-Up Post Instructions
Respond to at least two peers or one peer and the instructor. Further the dialogue by providing more information and clarification.
Here are suggested responses.
- What did you find interesting/surprising about the descriptive statistics in your peer’s post?
- Complete a Compare/Contrast with your data set and a similar data set that was presented by a peer.
Writing Requirements
- Minimum of 3 posts (1 initial & 2 follow-up)
- APA format for in-text citations and list of references
Solution:
The data set I found is from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) about infant mortality. The site referenced differences in the age and educational level of the mothers and looked at the number of births versus the number of deaths in each category. As a nurse, a mother and a grandmother, I found this site interesting. The age range I looked at was 15 to 19 years compared to 20 to 24 years. The educational level went from 8th grade or less through a bachelor’s degree. There were a total of 194,377 births and 1,743 deaths in the 15 to 19 age range, and 764,780 births and 5,319 deaths in the 20 to 24-year range.
The numbers for the births in the 15-19-year range were;
7,000, 85,411, 80,203, 18,806, 830, 48, 2,073.
The numbers for the deaths in the 15-19-year range were;
67, 768, 680, 159, 6, 1, 62
The mean for the births is 16,310.89 for the 15 to 19-year-old population
