Nursing Practice Concern/Problem

My specialty track is Family Nurse Practice (FNP). The area of concern identified in this project proposal is the reduction of maternal mortality particularly among the women in minority groups. As an FNP nurse, it is my role to oversee patient health and wellness for all populations groups including women. Following the critical nature of pregnancies, women at child-bearing age mist are provided for quality and safe patient care since pre-conception, pregnancy, to post-natal. FNP must ensure the health and safety of both new mothers and newborns to prevent pregnancy-related complications, including death. As put forward by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2019), approximately 700 women die from pregnancy-related complications on a yearly basis, amounting to a rate of 17.2 deaths per 100,000 live births. According to Edmonson, McCarthy, Trent-Adams, McCain, and Marshall (2017), approximately 60 percent of the maternal deaths can be prevented with proper availability and access to quality healthcare services. Maternal deaths mostly affect women from minority and low-socioeconomic groups such as the Native Americans, African-Americans, and Alaska Natives. As put forward by MacDorman, Declercq, Cabral, and Morton (2016), women from minority groups are three times more affected by maternal mortality as compared to white women due to poor social-economic status, inadequacy of proper healthcare facility for delivery of quality care, and inability to afford quality healthcare services due to lack of health insurance. There is a need to address this problem in order to not only enhance the health outcomes and quality of care among the minority women but to also bring the health gap between women from the majority and minority population groups by reducing maternal mortality rates among the minority women. As argued by Zaharatos, St. Pierre, Cornell, Pasalic, and Goodman(2018), a high proportion of maternal mortalities occur post-delivery due to insufficient post-natal follow-ups. In the U.S, the standard post-natal care is usually done only once, 6 weeks post-delivery. Medicare only covers for this single post-natal visit, making it difficult for women from low socio-economic status to seek quality medical care following childbirth, resulting in untreated pregnancy-related complications that are life-threatening if not treated…….Please click the icon below to purchase full answer at only $10
