Collaboration Cafe: Teaching with Technology (graded)

Nurses engage in simulation to support learning in both the academic and professional development contexts. As a result, nurse educators must be equipped to engage in activities that support learning using simulation, virtual reality, and serious gaming technologies. Consider your future nurse educator role and the context within which you hope to practice; respond to the following:

  • Identify one example of a learning activity that involves simulation or virtual reality; explain the activity in detail.
  • Explain how Debriefing for Meaningful Learning (DML) would be implemented with this learning activity.
  • Share an original idea to facilitate learning using serious gaming technologies.
  • How might these strategies facilitate learning in your future nurse educator role?

Solution:

Simulation lab, as described by Owen et al. (2017) is an educational process that replicates clinical practices within a safe environment. One example of simulation lab activity is that of Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Simulation Lab in which uses a high-fidelity manikin displaying cardiac arrest events. The nurse students are required to think critically and work in groups to recognize the presenting emergency event and perform the necessary treatment procedures. This allows the students to demonstrate and use their knowledge of basic life support, ACLS algorithms for cardiac rhythms, teamwork, and communication.

Debriefing for Meaningful Learning (DML) is a debriefing approach applied in simulation environments and clinical settings to enhance nursing student’s learning and reflective thinking (Bradley, 2019). One way DML can be integrated into this learning is by guiding the students through questions to point out what went wrong and what they would do differently, with…Please click the icon below to purchase full answer at only $5
