Assignment: Analysis of a Pertinent Healthcare Issue

The Quadruple Aim provides broad categories of goals to pursue to maintain and improve healthcare. Within each goal are many issues that, if addressed successfully, may have a positive impact on outcomes. For example, healthcare leaders are being tasked to shift from an emphasis on disease management often provided in an acute care setting to health promotion and disease prevention delivered in primary care settings. Efforts in this area can have significant positive impacts by reducing the need for primary healthcare and by reducing the stress on the healthcare system.

Changes in the industry only serve to stress what has always been true; namely, that the healthcare field has always faced significant challenges, and that goals to improve healthcare will always involve multiple stakeholders. This should not seem surprising given the circumstances. Indeed, when a growing population needs care, there are factors involved such as the demands of providing that care and the rising costs associated with healthcare. Generally, it is not surprising that the field of healthcare is an industry facing multifaceted issues that evolve over time.

In this module’s Discussion, you reviewed some healthcare issues/stressors and selected one for further review. For this Assignment, you will consider in more detail the healthcare issue/stressor you selected. Analysis of a Pertinent Healthcare Issue

Violence in healthcare is a significant national issue that affects not only the providers but also the patients, and the healthcare industry at large. Healthcare providers, on a daily basis, face various forms of violence including verbal abuse and physical assaults which place their safety at risk, negatively affecting the quadruple aim (Phillips, 2016). The purpose of this paper is to examine the issue of violence in healthcare and its impact on our healthcare organization, identify and summarize articles about violence in healthcare, and summarize the strategies for addressing violence in healthcare.

Violence in Healthcare and Its Impact

Healthcare workers are at an elevated risk of violence across the globe. According to the World Health Organization [WHO] (n.d), between 8-38% of health workers experience physical violence during their careers at some point. Others experience verbal aggression from both patients and visitors. Statistics taken from 2013 to 2018 show that 76% of registered nurses (RNs) report encountering workplace violence (Hamblin et al., 2017). More so, 54.2% and 29.9% report experiencing verbal and physical abuse, respectfully, from patients. Almost 33% and 3.5% of nurses respectfully reported verbal and physical abuse by visitors. The most prevalent violence acts against nurses include grabbing which is at 37.8% and 1.1% by patients and visitors respectfully; swearing at 53% and 24.9% by patients and visitors respectfully; and shouting/ yelling which is at 60% and 35.8% by patients and visitors respectfully (Groenewold et al., 2018). Violence in healthcare is underreported as according to Hester, Harrelson, and Mongo (2016), only 20-60% of violence incidences are reported. Violence in the workplace is highly……
