Instructions
You are attending an international journalist event and have been chosen to give a presentation of the roles of the media in influencing government and its citizens. Identify and describe the roles of the media in influencing government and its citizens using specific descriptive examples. Please create a PowerPoint presentation to assist you in your presentation.
As you complete your presentation, be sure to:
- Use speaker’s notes to expand upon the bullet point main ideas on your slides, making references to research and theory with citation.
- Proof your work
- Use visuals (pictures, video, narration, graphs, etc.) to compliment the text in your presentation and to reinforce your content.
- Do not just write a paper and copy chunks of it into each slide. Treat this as if you were going to give this presentation live.
Presentation Requirements (APA format)
- Length: 8-10 substantive slides (excluding cover and references slides)
- Font should not be smaller than size 16-point
- Parenthetical in-text citations included and formatted in APA style
- References slide (a minimum of 2 outside scholarly sources plus the textbook and/or the weekly lesson for each course outcome)
- Title and introduction slide required

Over the past decades, media has substantially evolved as a result of new technological innovations. Today, there are new media platforms such as social media and websites among others. Still, its influence on the government and the public remains unchanged. The only change has been on how media influences the two parties. It remains integral in influencing public opinion, attitudes, and behaviors as well as stimulating citizen engagement in political affairs. As the government’s watchdog, the media is expected to hold the government accountable for its actions or lack thereof. In addition, it increases political transparency by investigating and showcasing relevant political issues. Jakande Lateef, a former journalist once said, “The Press is more important than the other functions of government for none of them has so ramifying an influence and great a power on the daily lives of millions of people” (Bennett & Pfetsch, 2018). This statement reverberates even in today’s society.
The media plays a major role in influencing the public opinion and government. It helps shape public policy, set agenda, influence public opinion, pressure the government to act, and act as the government’s watchdog among other roles. Policy makers and the public receive opinions, facts, and messages through the media. Consequently, the media is able to dictate that which is prominent in world affairs and that which is not. This slide outlines just but some of the roles played by the media. Others include altering administration of public policies, contributing to policy content, assessing effectiveness of existing policies, influencing the tempo of decision making process, and aiding lawmakers and the public in deciding how to vote (Whitman, 2019).
