Representing a Democracy

Congress comprises two chambers: the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Senate is the upper chamber. The federal chamber comprises of 100 senators who are directly voted for by the public. Each state elects two senators. On the other hand, the House of Representatives is the national and lower chamber of Congress. It comprises of 435 voting members. The two houses are part of the country’s representative democracy (Whitman, 2019). For this assignment, I was required to select two senators and a member of the House of Representatives dependent on my locality. I reside in the 14th Congressional district of New York State. As such, I selected Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as the representative. The senators are Kristen Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer. Herein, I analyze the background of each of the three representatives and also explain why I find Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to be the most interesting.

Biography Overview

Kristen Gillibrand was born and raised in upstate New York. She schooled in Albany’s Academy of Holy Names. In 1984, she graduated from Emma Williard School, which is located in Troy, New York(U.S Senate, 2020b). She then graduated from Dartmouth College four years later and progressed to UCLA School of Laws where she got a law degree in 1991. Her first job was serving as a law clerk in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. She served as an attorney for at least a decade, served in the Clinton administration as Special Counsel to the United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and again as an attorney prior to becoming a Congressional representative in 2009(U.S Senate, 2020b). The mother of two sons is married to Jonathan Gillibrand. In 2018, her income averaged $218,000, which is an accumulation of her revenue from a book deal and her senatorial salary. Her policy interests are in protecting the rights and interests of the senior members of the community and reforms of military justice with regard to sexual assault cases.
