In the United States, women account for 51% of the population (Blazina & Desilver, 2021). Still, they are referred to as a minority. This reference is mainly because women account for a significantly less percentage in positions of political power. For years, women have continued to be underrepresented in Congress. The underrepresentation is also lower among women of color. This write-up explores changes in representation in congress and impact of women underrepresentation in Congress.
Recent statistics show that the 117th Congress is the most gender and ethnically diverse congress in American history. Approximately 23% of congress is ethnic or racial minorities (Schaeffer, 2021). Herein, there are 59 African Americans, 46 Hispanics, 17 Asians, and 6 Native Americans. This was a significant increase in comparison to the 116th congress (Schaeffer, 2021).
