Agenda setting can be a difficult task in government. Why? Who do you consider an important agenda setter in government? How does this participant help set the agenda? Give an example of an attempt at agenda setting in government. Was it successful? Why or why not? Consider how factors such as culture, political positions, etc. might impact your own, or the agenda setters’ priorities.
Use evidence (cite sources) to support your response from assigned readings or online lessons, and at least one outside scholarly source.
Solution:
Agenda setting is a dififcult process. This is primarily because of the high number of competing issues and interested parties(Whitman, 2019). In addition, each issue has its set of sponsors and opponents. The latter serve to make the process even more straining and difficult. I believe that the congressional majority and minority leaders have a lot of influence on the agenda setting process. Both the House of Representatives have minority and majority party leaders. Among these, I believe that the senate majority party leader is the most influential. The current majority party leader in the senate is Senator Mitch McConnell from Kentucky. The majority leader is in charge of floor duties, developing a calendar for the upper chamber, and lending a hand to the speaker or president in regards to policy decisions, policy formation, and program development (US Senate, 2020).
