The Future of Nursing report by the Institute of Medicine (IoM) recommends that 80% of nurses should hold at leader Bachelor in Nursing (BSN) degree by 2020 (Maughan, Bobo, Butler, & Schantz, 2016). According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), BSN preparation results in an improvement in patient outcomes, reduction in rates of failure-to-rescue, and fewer patient readmission, among many other positive outcomes (Altman, Butler, & Shern, 2016). This paper discusses my options as an undergraduate nurse in the job market, professional certification and advancement degrees I intend to pursue, the impact of increasing educational levels on my competitiveness in today’s job market and my role in the future of nursing, and my perspective regarding whether continuing education in nursing should be mandatory.

My Options as an Undergraduate in the Job Market

There are several job options for undergraduate Registered nurses in U.S. These include Clinical Nurse Manager which entails supervision of day to day activities in care units; Nurse anesthetist which encompasses working with anesthesiologists, surgeons, and medical professionals to deliver anesthesia to patients undergoing surgical procedures; labor and delivery nurse whose roles include caring for and educating women during their prenatal, delivery, and post-natal care; patient educator whose role is to develop educational programs for patients with various care settings; Chief Nursing Officer which entails directing staff nurses as well as managers; and critical care nurse whose roles include patient assessment and implementation of best care plan for patients in intensive and critical care units (Smolowitz et al., 2015).
