For the initial post, respond to one of the following options:

  1. Identify and describe one of the five (Brahman and Atman, Maya, Karma, Samsara, Moksha) key concepts from the Upanishads. Examine these teachings and the way they have influenced other expressions of Indian spirituality. Make sure your response is supported with quotes from the Upanishads and citations from scholarly sources.
  2. Choose one of the 4 Yogas. Define this path to the Divine, using examples. How does this path help to lead a person to realization? Why did you choose this path to discuss?


The Upanishads are a collection of texts of religious philosophy as well as philosophical nature written in India between c.1800 BCE and c.500 BCE.  The Upanishads were written during a time when the Indian society started to question the traditional Vedic religious order. One of the basic concepts of Upanishads is Karma. According to Molloy (2013), Karma is regarded as the Spiritual law. As such, it is equivalent to the Newton’s third law of motion “For every action, there i8s an equal and opposite reaction”.  Ideally, karma means deeds or actions. Taking this into consideration, good karma brings good result while bad karma brings bad result.  This is the basic theory of karma.
