  2. The destruction of the 2nd Temple in Jerusalem marks a major shift in the history and character of Judaism. What characterizes Jewish practice before the destruction of the 2nd Temple, and what characterizes Jewish practice after the Temple’s destruction? How are these practices different? What was maintained?

Solution:

The Second Temple was the Jewish holy temple that stood on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem during the Second Temple Period.  This was the period between 516 BCE and 70 CE. The Romans destroyed the Second Temple and Jerusalem in 70 CE as retaliation for an ongoing Jewish revolt (Molloy, 2013). After the destruction of the Second Temple, many additional prayers were added for the purpose of replacing the sacrificial offerings that were performed regularly at the temple. Taking this into account, the synagogues became the central place of worship in place of the temple (Friedman, 2015).
